Parenting styles play an integral role in the development of a child. During the first few years of life, the parents assume a special role of importance as their child progresses through a unique period of human development. As parents guide their young children from complete dependence into the beginning stages of self autonomy, parenting styles can have both immediate and lasting effects of the child s social functioning in addition to their mental and physical development. In order to ensure the child reaches their developmental milestones, the parent needs to find the balance between disciplinary and nurturing methods while maintaining a stable, and safe home environment. This essay will compare and contrast the problematic aspects of parental child rearing in addition to the social challenges faced within authoritarian, neglectful and permissive parenting to the ideal and widely practiced, authoritative parenting style.
